Chapter Seven

“Are you sure you’ve got everything you need?” Justin asked for the third time.

“There’s enough food to feed me for at least a month. I have both of your phone numbers in this new phone you insisted I had to have despite there being a landline here. I have the hotel’s number, and you’re going to text me your room number when you get there. I have all of your friend’s numbers programmed into the phone. Am I missing anything?” she asked.

“That’s about it,” Justin said. “I guess you’re ready.”

“I’m not the one who needs to be ready. That’s you guys. Do you have your clothes packed? The stuff you need for the job?” she asked.

Jethro held up his metal case. “Got the work stuff here. All our clothes are in those two bags. We’re good.”

“Then you better get going before it’s tomorrow,” she said.

“Wish you were going with us,” Jethro said. “Gonna miss you, baby girl.”

She smiled. “I’ll miss you guys, too.”

“Then pack a bag and come on,” Jethro said.

“I’ll be more comfortable here. You’ll be back before you know it. We’ll talk to each other every night. Go on now. I’ll talk to you when you get there. Be careful driving,” she said.

She watched as they picked up their bags and walked out the door. She followed them to the truck. When they’d stowed their things in the back seat, she wrapped her arms around Jethro and stood on tiptoe to give him a quick kiss good-bye. He cupped her head in his large hand and deepened the kiss so that her toes curled in her shoes.

“See you soon, baby girl. Be safe for me,” he said.

“I will.”

She turned to Justin and was immediately swept up into his arms. He wrapped up in his arms and kissed as if he would never see her again. His mouth plundering hers until she had to pull back just to breathe.

“Take care, sweetness,” Justin said.

“You guys, be careful.” She stepped back and waved as they climbed up into the big truck and backed out of the drive.

Maddy waved until they were out of sight then walked back into the big house and locked the door. It immediately felt huge and empty without them. It was as if the entire life of the place had been sucked out. She sighed. What had she expected? They had made the house the home that it had felt like. Now that they were gone, it was just a building with walls and furniture.

She walked into the kitchen and grabbed a Diet Coke from the fridge, then returned to the living room to read. She found it difficult to concentrate for very long. She dropped the e-reader to her lap and thought about the men for long periods of time then picked it back up and read again. She did this several times before she finally gave up and close it to see about making something to eat for lunch.

She decided to eat her lunch out on the deck.
